With the recent efforts to enlighten people on the importance of the environment in the form of Earth Hour, it is quite fitting that one of the features for this iK edition is a company called Better Place.
Better Place is a venture-backed company that provides a support structure for electric vehicles. Its aim is to reduce the global dependency on oil by providing consumers with a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to the current forms of transport.
Currently building its first electric car network in Austrailia, California, Denmark, and Israel, Better Place removes the main obstacles to the mass adoption of electric cars which are; the driving ranges of electric vehicles, and costly batteries. The company owns the batteries directly and provides battery charging spots and battery exchange stations.
Its founder Shai Agassi was inspired during the World Economic Forum in 2005 when the question “How do you make the world a better place by 2020?” was asked. This gave birth to Better Place which was founded in 2007 and officially launched in 2008. Agassi was recently named TIME Magazine’s “Heroes of the Environment 2008.”
Far from being just another corporate company who just wants to go “green” to capitalize on the current trend to save the planet, Better Place shows its real commitment towards the planet with its numerous initiatives in getting various communities worldwide involved through its interactive web site. One of their stand-out efforts is their call to action asking people to create a ten word manifesto.
